Product direction for UK startups

Product direction gives a startup a shared basis for deciding what to explore, what to defer and what evidence to seek. OCAYE helps UK founders connect customer understanding to practical product choices and a testable next milestone.

01

Start from the job users need done

Describe what a user is trying to achieve, the circumstances around that task and the steps they take today. Ask where the current approach becomes frustrating or costly. This helps a team decide whether the problem is worth addressing before committing to a feature or interface.

User needs may vary by profession, organisation size and region. Research with one initial group can reveal useful detail, but it does not automatically represent other UK users. Note the limits of the sample and identify who else should be heard before a wider product decision.

  • Map one core task from trigger to outcome.
  • Record the current workaround and points of friction.
02

Test the most important product assumption

Choose the uncertainty that could most change what you build. Perhaps users do not understand the value, cannot complete the key task or already have an acceptable alternative. Build a lightweight concept or prototype that exposes this question, and ask participants to use it rather than simply endorse the idea.

  • State a test question and what different outcomes would mean.
  • Select participants who match the intended user context.
03

Prioritise product work transparently

Compare candidate work using a small set of considerations: user benefit, confidence in the evidence, strategic relevance and effort. Discuss dependencies and constraints honestly. Record why an item is included now or deferred so that the team can revisit the choice when new evidence arrives.

A product roadmap is a set of current decisions, not a promise that every item will ship. Keep near-term learning milestones distinct from longer-term possibilities. This helps collaborators understand both ambition and the reasons for sequencing.

04

Turn direction into a reviewable milestone

Choose a milestone with an outcome the team can inspect, such as a tested journey, a clear problem definition or an agreed product concept. State what will be learned and what decision follows. A bounded milestone makes progress easier to communicate to teammates and potential partners.

OCAYE offers product strategy and planning support. Discuss the product decision, the research available and the delivery capabilities you need, then agree the responsibilities and next milestone.
